In a tragic incident that occurred in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, on Sunday, a group of individuals believed to be cultists brutally ended the life of a mentally ill man.
According to an anonymous source, who provided this information to ARMINDEX, the victim was a well-known figure in the Zik Avenue area of Awka. He was attacked while he was at his usual spot in Dike Park
The assailants unleashed a hail of bullets at the victim, but strangely, none of the projectiles seemed to have any effect on him. Frustrated by their inability to harm him with firearms, they resorted to stabbing him repeatedly, but each attempt failed to produce the desired result. In a final desperate act, they used cutlasses and even stones to assault him until he succumbed to the relentless onslaught, at which point the assailants hastily fled the scene
The motive behind the attack appears to be linked to the victim’s alleged involvement in a cult before the onset of his mental illness. However, it remains unclear why he was targeted, particularly given his deranged mental state
“Some individuals speculate that the man may have been feigning madness, but it is evident that his mental illness was genuine, as he exhibited behaviors such as consuming his own excrement. He was reportedly a cultist before his descent into madness. The reasons behind his mental deterioration remain a mystery, but as is often the case with cultists, once you are in, you are in for life, and they will stop at nothing to reclaim their own,” the source elaborated.
The Anambra State Police Command has verified the incident. DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesperson for the state police command, disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Central Police Station in Awka swiftly dispatched officers to the scene. The victim’s lifeless body was recovered and subsequently placed in a morgue.
Ikenga also indicated that the mental health status of the deceased would be evaluated when his family claims his body. The police are actively working with eyewitnesses to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this heinous act.
It was revealed that the deceased originally hailed from Enugu State.
“He had engaged in certain protective rituals while he was of sound mind, which appeared to have continued to provide him with some form of protection even during his period of mental illness. This is why bullets and stabbing failed to harm him,” a source explained.
The city of Awka has unfortunately been marred by a series of cult-related killings, often attributed to power struggles among rival groups within the state capital. Recent incidents include the fatal shooting of a musician at his home’s entrance and the gruesome killing of a revenue agent at the popular Eke Awka market in July, during which his head was severed from his body
